Gastroscopy
A gastroscopy is where an endoscope, a thin flexible tube with a video camera at the tip, is inserted through your mouth, into your oesophagus, stomach and duodenum.

It is used to
-investigate symptoms related to these organs
-take samples (biopsies) to diagnose or exclude certain diseases
-treat certain conditions

It is performed under twilight sedation, and usually only takes 5 – 10 minutes to perform. It can also be performed in the same admission with a colonoscopy and/or Iron infusion.

It can only be performed by a qualified gastroenterologist or surgeon, with appropriate credentials from the Conjoint Committee of Australia
