Colonoscopy
A colonosocpy is where a colonoscope, a thin flexible tube with a video camera at the tip, is inserted through your rectum to the end of the colon (large bowel) and usually to the end of the terminal ileum (last part of the small bowel)

It is used to
-investigate symptoms related to these bowel
-take samples (biopsies) to diagnose or exclude certain diseases
-remove polyps
-treat certain conditions
​
It is performed under twilight sedation, and usually only takes 20 – 40 minutes to perform. It can also be performed in the same admission with a gastroscopy and/or Iron infusion.

It can only be performed by a qualified gastroenterologist or surgeon, with appropriate credentials from the Conjoint Committee of Australia

How to Prepare
​
Bowel Preparation and Low Fibre Diet
In order to properly examine the large bowel, it needs to be empty of all faeces, and fibrous material.
Any remaining faeces/fibrous material are not able to be suctioned up by the colonoscope and will impair the views obtained.
Sometimes a poor bowel preparation or remaining fibrous material, my necessitate a repeat colonoscopy.
You will be given instructions on

Fasting times
Instructions are available in written form or via a phone app with notifications.
These will be provided for you at the time of the booking, along with your bowel preparation kit.
There is an additional cost of $25 for the bowel preparation kit.

Tablets – all your regular medications can be taken with a SMALL sip of water
Diabetic or Blood thinning Medication – you will have received instructions on these via email, or after consultation with Dr Ryan prior to your procedure
Am I Clear[RS2] ?
As you drink your bowel preparation your bowel return will go through a series of changes from semi solid stool, to liquid faeces, to watery faeces, to yellowish fluid with particles in it, to yellowish fluid with no particles in it, to watery.
Please continue to drink the fluid as instructed, even if you think you are clear.
